Today I would like to dedicate this post to the most misunderstood member of the family: Louis. Louis is 7 and the classic middle child in every way. While people are ooing and awing over Jean's adorable tendencies, or praising Justine for her quiet nature and helpfulness, Louis is flailing about in the background begging for attention.
To be fair, Louis has more energy than a normal child. But it isn't the ADHD type of energy where he can't sit still, it just endless, boundless energy. Imagine if you locked a golden retriever in a cage all day long and then set him free at 5 o'clock, all he wants to do is run like the wind..and thats Louis (only he has school instead of a cage).
I try to get as much of this energy out of him as I can- endless games of tag, hide and go seek, capture, etc... but it doesn't help much. Louis's downfall is that he never knows when to use his energy and he always picks the wrong time...i.e. everyone is sitting quietly watching a movie and Louis dives across the couch, or Jean is finally settled down after some upset and Louis thinks now is the perfect time to tickle-attack him...etc. These things always end up with Louis getting yelled at and he sulks away crying and complaining that no one loves him. Then later when we are walking along the beach and Justine starts tickling Jean, Louis gets upset that no one is yelling at her to stop (but walking outside is a totally appropriate time for energy expenditure) and he complains again that no one loves him. Here is a picture of when this happened today:
To be fair, Louis does have a fair amount of things taken away from him and given to Jean (typically because Jean cries louder) and he is slightly justified with some of his tears.
Anyway, this post is an Ode to LouLou...here's a little attention just for you, bud!
PS- I have been getting up at 8am everyday on this school break even when everyone else sleeps much longer because I like to have a little quiet time by myself at breakfast...but everyday Louis creeps into the kitchen at 8:15 and has more needs at breakfast than you could imagine. "I want hot chocolate" "I also would like some orange juice!" "Nutella sandwich please!" "I want an apple!" "Ew, this napkin has Nutella on it!" "Will you peel the skin off this apple?" "I don't actually want this apple anymore" ....he makes each of these requests 3 minutes apart- which gives me just enough time to not enjoy my breakfast at all. By time he is finished with all this the rest of the family has woken up and my attempt at a quiet morning has failed again. He also has this lovely tendency of reporting to the family anytime I do something strange, "Allie had two bowls of cereal!!!" (It was out of a coffee-cup though and they were small servings!) or "Allie gave me apple juice even though I asked for Orange!!" (He definitely asked for apple)
PPS- Yes, I did just write a whole PS about Louis's obnoxious tendencies...and yes I realize that makes this whole post a bit invalid. Oh well, he is a middle child after all.
